To Ugg or not to Ugg?

Uggs, comfy Uggs!

I know, very blah topic -as hasn’t this been the question on every girl’s mind since these infamous boots crossed hemispheres some years ago? Anywho, I HAVE to talk about them – sorry! – as they have been quite on mind these days…

When Ugg boots first came under my radar- courtesy of Paris H and Pamela D…yes classy! –  I automatically dismissed them: bulky, furry, un-shapely and unclassy – how could I ever dare wearing those in super stylish Paris? How could they co-habit with all my other highly polished pretty very special shoes? “No thank you very much”. Even SJP wearing a very comfy Ruby Red pair- at home!- in one of the SATC episodes didn’t sway my resolution.

Then I moved to London, United Kingdom.

The UK – the capital of a unique eclectic edgy style…but also dare I say the land of er mmm “comfortable wear”. By CW, I mean tracksuits, leggings, trainers…you know trainer WITH office wear on the tube platform at 7.43 (although I understand, I will NEVER get over this very anglo-saxon habit… I can’t even get myself to wear trainer to go the gym…thinking now maybe I just found THE reason why I am not a fan the gym thing…hum moving on….). Yes. Trainers. And Ugg Boots!

From my initial “Non merci” and probably driven by sheer peer pressure (East Enders, Katie P,…Closer Magazine), Ugg boots started “to grow on me” and before I could say “ugly” I’d find myself thinking “oh but they are SO comfy”, “they completely balance the silhouette with skinny jeans and make you look skinnier – no?”, “they are definitely NOT even okay for the whole WE but surely appropriate for Sundays – no? Technically Sunday is all about hanging out in Starbucks reading a book in your pyjis- no? What harm could it be to switch home slippers with Uggs?”

Fast forward to December 2009.

It took being 8 months pregnant to definitely break me!

And this was the beginning of a sloppy slope of Ugg based combos: Dress-legging-Uggs  / loose shirt-skinny jeans-Uggs / summer top-shorts- Uggs … Uggs have managed to become THE staple of my mat leave wardrobe. What do they say again about revenge?

Thankfully going back to work has helped de-Uggs me… but only for me to spend the week longing, from the top of my 6inch heels, for their comfort. Week-Ends have just gotten a whole new meaning!

Now to the real drama behind this story –pardon the long intro. I am going back to Paris for the 1st time in 18months with baby and hubby . It feels a bit like homecoming and thus requires a careful outfit planning strategy. Criteria:

  • Stylish (as you would expect after 18months in London City !),
  • Flattering (to show off I have –almost!- snapped back into shape….almost….),
  • Weather appropriate (oh I hate Paris weather even more than London’s ) and
  • Last but not least comfy shoes (to run around a toddler).

Check. Check. Check. And STOP. MA-JOR DRA-MA. Not only my so un-parisian-it-is-a-joke Uggs have the desired comfy-ness but they are THE key tie in to all my casual outfits. Dilemma dilemma . I asked my sister “Sara, are Uggs Boots a no-no in PariS?” “No No No No No No……”

Okay 2 options then.

  1. Run now to Ash to find some cool Biker Boots that could do the trick. Probability – low as I have been looking for those for years and still haven’t found what I am looking for (!)
  2. Pack 5 pair of shoes. Probability – very low as although very supportive, hubby will probably put his foot down (!!!) – I am on a roll!

Or maybe… just maybe pack my Uggs and hope for the best?
