Last week, as I was half-awaken, queuing at my work’s cafeteria for a much much needed Skinny Mocha, one of my friends yelled out to me “I know you are Moroccan Hind, but are you sure this is scarf weather?”. It took my pre-Mocha self 5 minutes of staring at said friend before it clicked! Today is an unusually sunny and warm spring day in London calling for bare legs, flowery dresses, sandals…. as everybody who has been in this city for more than 5 minutes knows how ephemeral sunny weather could be. And how was I making the most of it? I was wearing a scarf.
Odd? Not really. I always have had an obsession with scarves. Why? Simple. I think scarves are stylish ….AND I have to admit I have a sensitive throat I like to keep warm!
As a shapelessly/awkwardly dressed teenager, I remember wrapping my neck in a double layer of my dad’s woolly scarves – I thought it gave me Parisian Sorbonne Chic…hum… and made my silhouette look slimmer …hum hum. You have to love the genuine stupidity innocence that makes teenage years so …..precious….I would love to share an illustration but thankfully sadly there is no surviving photo of this golden era. Snif snif. not.
Over the years, I can pretty safely say that my sartorial style has changed. A LOT. But one constant remained. Wanna guess? Yep. The scarves were in every single period.*
Rebel rock: Black fringy scarf.
Romantic fleur des champs: silky flowery scarf.
Folk: Pink woolly XXL Gap scarf. And so on and so forth. …
But over the last 4 years, I have found a winning trio that do not leave me be it winter or summer, classy or casual. Introducing….rolling drums…
Mango Red Silky Scarf. We met in Mango on Regent street 4 years ago when the bright RED caught my eyes. I then casually wrapped it around my neck…and the rest is history. The simplest accessory that lifts EVERY outfit (and believe me I tried with A LOT of outfits), gives amazing skin glow and multitasks (I have been known to use to shade baby for nap in plane, around head when raining,….). PS- I am actually wearing )again) it on one of my home pages pictures!
GAP MEN woolly stripy scarf. We met when my husband proudly brought it home after an impulse buy driven by sub-zero temperatures in Paris 4 years ago. It was love at first sight and it has been mine ever since. The color are so “me”, the length is perfect for casually wrapping around the neck and I swear it makes me look skinny-er. Fact.
Beige double wrap cashmere scarf. This most recent acquisition is a gift from my very insightful little sister in Paris 2 months ago. When we met for a long awaited WE in Paris (me flying from London and she from Copenhagen), I could not help but notice that my always stylish sister was supporting a double wrap black scarf (you know the “closed” scarf type when you technically have a big loop and wrap around your neck?). I loved. So I borrowed it. A Lot. Until my sis said she actually have to give it back to her friend ( I do still question that storyline though…too convenient). Anyway, as she went to “give back” the scarf to “her friend” she popped in an H&M and found an even better replica (although I am pretty sure not very cashmere) in a beautiful beige. I have not took it off ever since. Until now as temperature are flirting with 30 degrees.
But speaking the honest truth….I love scarves so much simply because they are my ultimate comfort blanket. I wrap them around my neck and feel I can conquer the world**
Bisous bisous
*My initial impulse was to summarize these phase in a min excel spreadsheet but then thought otherwise not to give away the super-geek that I am!!!
**Or at least take on the day
